Judge Adam McGinnis was born in Detroit, Michigan and raised in Clearwater, Florida graduating high school from Clearwater Central Catholic High School. An Alumni of the University of Central Florida, having graduated in 2002 with a B.S. in Liberal Arts, Judge McGinnis attended and graduated from Barry University School of Law with his J.D. degree in 2005. While attending law school he studied at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom under the late Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court, William Rehnquist. In 2012 Judge McGinnis became the first graduate of Barry University School of Law to be elected as a Judge and in 2013 was awarded the 2013 Rising Star Award for distinguished alumni by Barry University.
While attending law school, Judge McGinnis was active in many of the schools government bodies being both Treasurer of the Hispanic American Law Student Association, where he won the award for Board Member of the year in 2004-2005, and for the Student Body Government. While a Board Member for Phi Alpha Delta law fraternity he received the Justice’s Choice Award in 2003 and also received the Book Award for the highest grade in Immigration law in 2005. After graduation, Judge McGinnis was an instructor at the Barry University campus for Bar-bri, the leader in student bar preparation classes.
After graduation, Judge McGinnis opened his own firm Adam K. McGinnis, P.L. focusing on criminal and traffic related cases and over the course of his practice handled thousands of cases in County Criminal and County Civil Court. During this time he became a Florida Supreme Court Certified County Mediator and was an Adjunct Professor at Valencia Community College teaching Business Law and Business Organizations from 2009-2011.
Elected to the County Bench in 2012, by a 54.31% margin, Judge McGinnis was initially assigned to the civil division handling small claims and county civil matters and in 2014 was next assigned to the criminal bench handling misdemeanor and traffic cases. He is now currently assigned to a specialized division handling initial appearances, arraignments and violations of probation.
Since being elected, Judge McGinnis has repeatedly scored high amongst his peers in Judicial Polls and is noted as having a great demeanor and work ethic. He is particularly credited with streamlining civil cases with en masse hearings, which reduces caseloads and allows for greater access to courts. He has participated as a presenter with Inside the Courts, a community outreach program designed to educate private citizens on courtroom procedures and decorum. Judge McGinnis routinely presents at local and state level Bar conferences educating young lawyers on various topics of law.
A member of the Florida Bar and Orange County Bar Association, Judge McGinnis has also been an active member in his community. An Usher and Day Care assistant at First Baptist Church of Orlando Judge McGinnis is also an active member of both the UCF Alumni Association and Barry University Alumni Association. Judge McGinnis has been married for twelve years to his wife Katy who is the Director for the Division of Real Estate for the State of Florida. Together they have a four year old daughter, Lilly.
